003The leveraged middle
Over five years Oracle needs about $78.7B of debt or equity even after $67.1B of customer prepays — and has already raised about $67.9B. SpaceX needs $411B on Street numbers, against $93.5B of cash.
Capex by year, and how it gets paid for
Oracle on fiscal years ending May (FY27 = Jun 2026–May 2027); SpaceX on calendar years. Scales differ by panel. Blue is customer prepays; orange is what prepays and operating cash flow can’t cover; the black tick marks operating cash flow.

Oracle: the gap is funded; the counterparty isn’t diversified
Oracle’s FY27 guide is $90–95B of capex but “not more than $70B” of net cash capex. Customers prepay the difference: $11.4B came in during the first quarter alone, and most new contracts are prepay or bring-your-own-hardware. Add $67.9B of notes, convertible preferred and at-the-market equity raised since FY26, and most of the five-year gap is already financed.
The risk sits elsewhere. Oracle books these prepays with a “significant financing component” — economically, a loan from the customer that it repays in compute. About half of its $664B backlog is one customer, OpenAI. That’s why its CDS hit a record 288bp in October with the funding gap largely closed: the market is pricing who pays, not how much is needed. If you treat the prepays as debt, Oracle’s external need rises to $146B.
SpaceX: cash now, a cliff if it builds to plan
On Street numbers SpaceX needs about $411B over five years. The $93.5B of IPO cash covers 2026 and roughly half of 2027. Building to the ~10 GW Musk has described for end-2027 raises the five-year need to $651B, and $426B of that lands in 2026–27 alone, while the build is happening. Against that, the $40B chip financing now in talks is a down payment. There are no prepays: Anthropic and Google pay monthly, and either can walk on 90 days’ notice. The revenue backing this buildout can be cancelled faster than the debt can be repaid.

Method
Oracle uses fiscal years ending May. FY26 is actual (capex $55.7B; OCF $32.0B split into $27.4B ex-prepay and $4.6B prepays, which reproduces the reported −$23.7B FCF). FY27 uses the $92.5B capex midpoint, with prepays set so net cash capex lands at the $70B ceiling. FY28–30 are our estimates: capex peaks in FY28 as the RPO Oracle says “won’t impact capex until fiscal 28” is built, then falls; prepays fade as fewer new contracts are signed; operating cash flow ramps as about half the backlog converts within three years.
SpaceX is calendar-year. Capex: Street blends ~$65B for 2026 (H1 $28.5B, H2 at the Q2 run rate) with analyst paths above $100B for 2027; the stated-target path builds toward ~10 GW by end-2027 at about $50B per GW ($400B of capex in 2027), then spends about $150B a year in 2028–30. Musk hasn’t given a target beyond end-2027, so the path doesn’t keep building at the 2027 pace. Operating cash flow is our estimate from H1 2026’s $3.5B and the ~$26B annual run rate of the Anthropic and Google compute contracts; it is the softest number here.
Prepays appear only where disclosed. SpaceX’s $14.3B of deferred revenue relates to space and connectivity contracts, not AI compute, so it isn’t counted.
